![]() Notes can be 'clicked into' staves after first choosing their durations from a floating palette using mouse or trackpad. So how do you get notes into Finale? Probably the most useful ways are two subtly different 'step time' methods, Simple Entry and Speedy Entry. Many ready-rolled education worksheets could keep class teachers going for months, and there's even an extensive bank of 'repertoire' - classical, jazz and traditional staples - as well as blank manuscript. There's also a dedicated Exercise Wizard (which instrumental teachers will love) to very quickly generate hundreds of different types of scales, interval patterns, arpeggios, more complex 'twisters', rhythms and jazz licks. If you're notating music for absolute beginners you can even take advantage of the included Alphanotes font, which imposes letter names on noteheads.Ī Setup Wizard helps you get going quickly with new scores, defining instruments from an impressively comprehensive list, setting initial key and time signature, and adding titles and composer/arranger information. Also in this latest version of Finale comes dedicated mallet and percussion fonts which will be welcomed by all those who hit stuff for a living. You can opt for a respectful, engraved look or a groovy, jazz-oriented pen-and-ink style, courtesy of the bundled Maestro and Copyist music fonts. ![]() Pop and jazz are catered for with chord symbols, guitar fretboard symbols, tab, drum kit and percussion notation. As you'd expect, there's practically no limit to the complexity of score that can be produced - everything from a single-stave solo part to a symphony orchestra and choir, and even 'special' notation for the avant garde. Music educators need something slightly different again, including page layout capabilities for producing worksheets.įinale 2012 caters for all of these, and others, with an extensive and to some extent configurable feature set. A composer, meanwhile, might look for a platform that assists experimentation, with good playback sounds. ![]() A professional copyist, preparing scores for commercial print, needs top-class engraving quality and notation flexibility. Notation means different things to different people. I always fancied learning the Knotweed Flute. The instrument list that appears as part of the score Setup Wizard is almost obsessively comprehensive. Or, indeed, that both MakeMusic and Avid, the parent companies of Finale and Sibelius, offer crossgrade deals to try and poach their rival's users. Since then, the two applications have been vying for supremacy (to put a dramatic spin on it) and it's no coincidence that their asking prices are pretty much identical. It happens to be the reason why I first bought a Mac, so I feel some special affinity with the old girl.įinale received a broadside in the '90s, though, with the arrival of the competitor notation package Sibelius, at first only on the niche RISC-based Acorn Archimedes platform, but later on Mac OS and Windows too. Back then, and through the first half of the '90s, if you needed really flexible notation delivered through a graphical user interface it really was the only game in town. Engraving quality is superb, but in this score, created with the Setup Wizard, longer stave names were disappearing into the margins, or off the page completely.īy any standards, Finale is a long-lived application, with roots stretching back into the 1980s. It's busy, and there are plenty of techniques to learn, but it's certainly configurable. What does its 2012 incarnation bring?įinale 2012's working environment sees palettes and floating windows accompanying a score window. MakeMusic's Finale score-writing software has been helping composers and publishers for a quarter of a century. Integrated switching regulators often come with compact, optimized, and tested PCB layouts which reduce the design cycle and time to market.īecause the environment of modern telecom systems demands higher performance along with smaller size and less floor space, PCB real estate is increasingly valuable. Moreover, the pin configuration of an integrated switcher is designed to preclude questions that would otherwise be faced about component location and grounding. Integrated switching regulators, in contrast, avoid many layout problems by integrating the power stage (MOSFETs and gate drivers) and current sensing within the device to eliminate several PCB interconnects. Most of these problems can be traced to the higher probability of layout mistakes when implementing a power supply containing several discrete external components. Those problems include improper power-stage layout, incorrect grounding schemes, routing of sensitive analog traces near power traces that carry rapidly changing currents and voltages, failure to provide Kelvin connections for voltage and current sensing, excessive EMI, and the location of decoupling capacitors. Apart from the time required for PCB layout, a major part of power-supply development consists of fixing layout-related problems. They are well suited to the distributed-power requirements of modern telecom boards, which require compact, multiple, point-of-load power supplies that provide an excellent transient response to dynamic loads.ĭesign, development, and testing of the power supply for a telecom system board represents a substantial part of that board's development time. What is new is the increased current capability and enhanced features now provided by such devices. The integrated switcher, which combines the MOSFETs, gate drivers, and PWM controller of a DC-DC switching converter within a single package, is not a new concept. In the past two decades, manufacturers of power-management ICs have done a tremendous job of producing devices that integrate many of the functional blocks required in power supplies for isolated and nonisolated DC-DC conversion applications. Many areas of the electronics business, including the power-electronics industry, employ a strategy that integrates system components to reduce overall cost, enhance reliability, and minimize valuable real estate on the PC board. Compared with the conventional power-distribution architecture for telecom boards (left side), the integrated switching-regulator architecture (right side) offers better efficiency and reliability, faster design, and a smaller footprint.īenefits of an Integrated Switching Regulator Integrated switching regulators are excellent candidates for this second power-conversion stage, because the required input voltage (≤ 12V) and output current (< 10A) are both relatively low.įigure 1. Such voltage conversions can be achieved with nonisolated, point-of-load power supplies as shown on the right side of Figure 1. The intermediate voltage is then converted to the system voltages required for specific loads. Improved performance can be obtained by using a single isolated, high-power DC-DC module to convert 48V to an intermediate supply rail of 12V or less. ![]() Such devices impose stringent requirements on the power supply: very fast transient response, high efficiency, lower voltage rails, and a reduced footprint area. That configuration, however, poses difficulties in meeting the load requirements of fast, low-voltage processors, DSPs, ASICs, and DDR memories. Traditional distributed-power architectures employ several isolated DC-DC power modules to convert a 48V bus voltage to system supply-voltage rails such as 5V, 3.3V, and 2.5V. In the end we've got a solid few hours of entertainment, and more than enough heart palpitations to go with it.Bloober Team’s latest, Layers of Fear 2, puts you in the shoes of an actor trying to find his or her character, in both the literal and figurative sense of that phrase. ![]() Those who will enjoy becoming completely immersed will take delight in puzzling over the situations that plague our protagonist throughout the story, and theorising over the heavy symbolism even after the game has long since revealed its ending.ĭefinitely one for the jump-scare adrenaline junkies, Layers of Fear 2 offers a hearty mix of slow, calculated suspense, and intense, terrifying chase sequences. While it offers a much wider range of puzzles and sequences to play through than its predecessor, it suffers from being a too obscure too often, and that leads to the loss of some of the weight in the story that most players will probably not forgive. To summarise, it is far from a perfect video game. Not only mannequins, but also a distorted, supernatural spectre that will pursue you relentlessly, subjecting you to a hugely drawn-out, loud instakill sequence that does start to become ever so frustrating after the 6th time you’ve fumbled a door handle. Because everybody is scared of mannequins. Gun MediaĪlas, yes, the game now has mannequins. You can enter a hallway that is seemingly empty, and then turn around to discover that the path you’ve just walked is now blocked by a terrifying mannequin holding a gun. While the mechanics remain largely the same, and the visuals and sound design are stellar as ever, I was delighted to find that the sequel also contained obnoxious and frightening changes to the environment while you weren’t looking. Early on in the game you will find a room full of artists equipment, and throughout the story you are encouraged by rats, and plagued by creepy portraits - as well as that one amusing sequence that involves a kitchen full of exploding fruit, a particular favourite take-away from the first game for myself.īut what does it actually do different, and is it an improvement over the first one? The short answer is: Absolutely. There are several subtle references to the first game, also, that will delight those who played and enjoyed it. New to Layers of Fear 2 are optional collectables in the form of photographic slides and movie posters, that will gradually begin to decorate your quarters, and give an extra bit of incentive to continue replaying the game even after finishing it once - a nice way of making the £25 price point a little more worth it.įeatured also are multiple different endings, giving each new game plus run some new opportunities as you try and unlock them. However, I cannot ignore the blatant interruption that this places in the way of the pacing, preventing the overall experience from being in any way smooth. ![]() In this world, nothing makes sense, and when you start to walk into a room expecting things to happen, it’s often the complete opposite. In sharing with the hopelessness and confusion, we are truly experiencing the protagonist’s journey as if it were our own. While this may initially frustrate some players, it is actually yet another strength of the game. There is one instance that sees you locked in a room with a desk fan and a tap, and the combination of which tap is running actually helps you escape the room. ![]() Gun MediaĪs mentioned above, the game does have some simple puzzle designs, and others that are simply bizarre that you solve simply by seeing what you can interact with in any given room. Hopefully a console controller doesn’t have this problem. While this definitely adds to immersion, panic and urgency during some mid-game chase sequences, playing on a PC with a gaming mouse resulted in some fumbling - and even struggling - to open a door in time to avoid an instant death. However, it's done by clicking and sliding them open, as seen in the likes of Amnesia: The Dark Descent. ![]() Gameplay-wise, there is only really one main mechanic, and that is opening and closing doors. Allow yourself to look past the thinly explained story and completely blank, emotionless protagonist, and you'll realise this game’s strengths are in environmental design, alongside overarching feelings of dread and mystery. Using headphones is absolutely the way to play, as Layers of Fear's less-intense portions are where the atmosphere truly gets to shine. |
