Open areas and even small amounts of elevation offer the best use of your light. Consider the effectiveness of your light at night when you are scouting a hunting area during the day. Keep in mind most coyotes will work to try and approach your call from downwind. Plan on hunting a crosswind or headwind to avoid your smell from giving you away. Just because the sun has gone down for the night doesn’t mean that a coyotes nose is any less effective. Select a location with the wind in mind first, and an excellent vantage point second. Use the darkness as your camouflage, but avoid bright moonlight from shining on you when you set up. Unlike calling coyotes during the day, avoiding being skylined and breaking up your outline is not necessary after dark. Try to think like a predator hunting small rodents in the cover of darkness when you’re scouting for nighttime coyote calling and hunting areas. Look for edges and transition areas where croplands, grasslands, and creeks or timber come together. Scout during daylight hours for areas where coyotes hunt and live for successful coyote hunts after dark. Hunting in the dark still requires scouting, but don’t expect to find exceptional hunting spots after dark. Scout During the Day for Nighttime Hunting Put these tools into practice to make your hunts more successful. There are some tactics and tools that will help you successfully connect with a coyote during a calling session after the sun goes down. Coyotes are built to hunt and thrive in the dark their eyes, ears, and nose continue to give them the edge anytime daylight or darkness. Using the cover of darkness to pursue coyotes during nighttime hours may sound easy, maybe even like cheating, but don’t underestimate the coyote. Make sure you know, understand, and follow the regulations where you intend to hunt before pursuing coyotes after dark. Still, other states have strict season regulations for nighttime hunting. Hunting coyotes with the aid of artificial light isn’t legal in all states, and some states only allow hunting coyotes at night with a shotgun. Not only are coyotes most active at night, but they are also at their most vocal in the darkness. The most common cause of death for coyotes in these areas is being hit by an automobile.Coyotes are primarily a nocturnal predator, and while you can successfully call in coyotes using various calls during the day, calling them into effective range during the dark hours of the night is extremely effective. They can live to be 15 years old in the wild but most don’t make it past 3. Urban coyotesĬoyote populations are increasing and they are moving more and more into more populated areas, hence the term “urban coyotes”. They are highly opportunistic feeders and will hunt day or night when an opportunity presents itself. Do coyotes hunt during the day?Īs mentioned above, coyotes are usually out in the evening more than the day. However they can commonly be seen in the day so I don’t think I would say they are 100% nocturnal. Are coyotes nocturnal?Ĭoyotes tend to be more nocturnal (active at night) than diurnal (active in the day), especially when living near humans so that they can avoid contact with us. During pup season, the mother will find a rudimentary den like a hollowed out fallen tree or burrow somewhere, and she may regularly move the pups to keep them safe.Īll other times coyotes usually live and sleep above ground. Coyotes are highly intelligent animals and if taking down large prey like a deer requires the help of others in a pack then they will do what is necessary.Ĭoyotes sleep in dens during pup season, but they don’t typically have a den like wolves do that they always return to, unless there are pups. They will commonly hunt in pairs or alone but rarely in a pack like wolves do. They do live in family units (packs) like wolves do though. Unlike their cousin, the wolf, coyotes do not hunt in packs. This makes you wonder if coyotes some of the things that wolves are famous for, like hunting in packs. They are also in the canine family and are similar to wolves in many ways, but also very different. Coyotes are native to North America and smaller than wolves.
